Thank you to everyone that showed up for today's @seaquest_southwest at Towan Headland! We had sightings of 2 seals, 1 harbour porpoise and 5 common dolphins as well as lots of birds, including 2 choughs who joined us on the headland. Well done to all for braving the cold wind 🌬️

Chuffed to spot a pair of choughs on a walk around Towan Headland today!

You can often hear them before you see them with their unique "chee-aww" call. Similar to other members of the crow family, look out for their distinctive red beak and red legs! 🐦‍⬛

There's lots going on around Newquay this weekend with the @benewquay Big Day Out, but don't forget about Seaquest Sunday from 11am-1pm on Towan Headland. Our expert spotters will be there with binoculars to borrow in hope of spotting some exciting marine life! 👀🐬🦭🐋🕊️📸

As Storm Erin hits Cornwall, please take extra car

As Storm Erin hits Cornwall, please take extra care on the coast...

Only visit beaches that have lifeguards present to ensure you know if and where you can safely enter the water. Do not enter the water if the red flag is flying as this indicates dangerous conditions 🚩

Most people who get in trouble in the water do not intend to enter the water in the first place, so be aware of the tides and where you could potentially be cut off 🛟

The tide can rise very quickly and, during stormy periods, waves can suddenly surge much higher than you expect, so be extra cautious of how close you get to the water - it is not worth the risk for a photo of the stormy sea! 🌊

If you see anyone in trouble in the water, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard 🚨

They are back!! The bodyboard bins are now on site in three locations. These are for broken bodyboards that will be recycled at the end of the summer.

Ideally, these boards would and should be banned - but until that time, lets reduce landfill, reduce polystyrene in the sea and recycle! ♻️

Find them at South Pentire, Porth and Towan Beach 🏖️

Two silent disco sessions available 🎧 :
- A 2pm family session with beach football fun ⚽
- An 8pm sunset session 🌅

Headphones and litter picking equipment are free to use but there is limited availability so don't be late! Meet in front of the lifeguard hut at North Fistral.

Love them or hate them, gulls are an iconic part o

Love them or hate them, gulls are an iconic part of the Cornish seaside. But nobody likes being dive-bombed for their pasty! Here are our top tips to keep the gulls at bay:

1. Never feed the gulls!

2. Don't leave food open or unattended outside

3. Dispose of leftover food and containers properly - if one bin is full, find the next one that has space

4. If eating outside, have your back to a wall as gulls will swoop from behind so don't give them the opportunity to sneak up on you!

5. If you spot a hungry gull eyeing up your food, keep eye contact 👀 Research has shown that if you look right at them, they are less likely to try and steal your food!

Gulls are very good opportunistic feeders and will take advantage of an easy meal, but once you let them have your food, they start to think all human food is ok to take and they'll get in the habit of taking it from your hand without being offered, so don't give them the opportunity! Overflowing bins also attract gulls to human food so never use a bin that doesn't have space for what you have to throw away. Use the next available bin, it's never far away 😊🙏🏼
